Shining
Star
originates from selections from Birdie II, Pennant,
Citation II, Charger, Commander, Competitor, stem rust
resistant collections and germ plasm selected in New
Jersey. The parental clones were planted in a turf trial
in Oregon the fall of 1989. During the winter of
89-90, 250 individual vegetative sprigs were taken from
the best 10 turf plots for leaf spot resistance. At
the same time, 600 sprigs were taken from a synthetic 283
in a 1988 turf trial.
The Shining Star population
originates from selections of attractive plants that were
sprigged from turf plots of Birdie II surviving after
three years on a sand green at a 3/8" mowing height.
The fall of 1990, a space plant nursery
was planted of 1700 seedlings of Shining Star.
After 2 years of selection for uniformity, early maturity,
stem rust resistance, leaf spot resistance, good seed
yield potential and a dark green color, 145 plants
remained for the production of breeder seed of Shining
Star.
Shining Star is a stable and uniform
variety. No off-type plants or variants have been
observed in the reproduction or multiplication of Shining
Star perennial ryegrass. Shining Star
has produced turf of good quality and uniformity.
Shining Star has an average mature
plant height of 68.43 cm. which is comparable to Manhattan
II.
