Varietal Description:
SONATA is a very dark blue-green
variety that produces a fine textured attractive turf. SONATA
has shown excellent fall performance, winter color
retention, shade tolerance, and good performance under low
maintenance conditions for a perennial ryegrass. It
has also exhibited excellent disease resistance, and
excellent performance as an overseeding perennial ryegrass
in the south. SONATA forms a very fine dense
turf with a superior brown patch resistance and heat
tolerance
SONATA exhibits many of the
same excellent quality performance characteristics of
Pennington's other top perennial ryegrass varieties with
the added benefit of superior Brown Patch and Red Thread
resistance.
Sowing
and Establishment Recommendations:
In
warm climates, Sonata tends to perform as an annual.
It will last longer into the Spring than Annual ryegrass.
Lime soil to 6.0 pH and follow soil test recommendations
for fertilization. Under ideal conditions,
germination begins in 6 days. If oversowing, care
must be taken to ensure adequate seed to soil contact.
Sow at the following rates –
- Lawns
50 grams per square meter
- Golf Course Fairways
25 to 50 grams per square meter
- Golf Course Greens
125 to 175 grams per square meter
- Golf Course Roughs
25 to 50 grams per square meter
- Golf Course Tees
75 to 125 grams per square meter
- Sporting Fields
50 to 100 grams per square meter
Subject to germination rate, first
mowing may begin at 21 days after sowing.
Recommended mowing heights are .60 cm or lower for greens
and 2.5 to 5 cm for lawn and landscape areas.
