Choices in Ryegrass For Pastures
Ryegrass seeds are available in either perennial or annual species with choices within these species. Here we strive to help you understand the difference between perennial ryegrass
and annual rye grass so that you can make an informed choice for your pasture ryegrass. Several ryegrass types exist and species within the ryegrass genus (Lolium)
readily cross with one another, resulting in a wide variety of plant types. This may cause some confusion when trying to determine the best choice for pasture planting. Pasture

of adaptation. Perennial ryegrass is also a multi-used grass in overseeding summer forages
and less winter hardy coverage.
PERENNIAL RYE GRASS PASTURE SEEDING RATE

Do Not Plant Ryegrass Developed For Lawns In Pastures!
Due to the potential for Ryegrasses to produce higher than desirable Endophyte production of toxins, you should only plant ryegrasses that have a known history of safe use for
forages. Most of the newer improved perennial ryegrass
varieties for lawns may contain endophytes and are NOT
usually suitable or recommended for pasture use. You should
plant an annual or Perennial ryegrass variety that is known to be
safe for animals. Most of the annual ryegrasses (gulf /
improved forage varieties - Marshall,
Passerel Plus Ryegrass,
Gulf Annual Ryegrass, etc.) are safe for
forage purposes.
Annual Rye Grass Information
Annual ryegrass is one of the most versatile forage grasses grown. Planted on its own or in almost any mixture imaginable,
this grass is used for pasturage in one form or another all over the world. Fast
germinating, quick growing, highly palatable to all types of livestock plus providing
winter pasturage makes this grass almost a necessity on many farms and ranches. A great
companion grass for oats, winter rye, clovers, any grassing seed, farm crop, vegetable
fields, berry producers, orchard - any place adapted for annual ryegrass can benefit in
some manner in planting ryegrass. This is also a ready source of silage, green
manure, and hay.

Gulf Annual Ryegrass
Annual ryegrass is used to overseed thousands of acres of summer pasture
grasses and erosion sites on farms and ranches. Planting ryegrass is also an effective natural method that can lessen nematode
infestation if used in rotational plantings with other crops.
Also great for use as a natural weed controller
when sown in heavy stands.
There are several improved annual ryegrass varieties adapted for the Southern pastures and for overseeding of those pastures
to provide additional green forage.
Passerel Plus Ryegrass, Marshall and
Gulf Annual Ryegrass are
three popular ones of the many varieties sold today. General seeding method is 20-40 lbs./acre depending upon
the usage or the grass.
PASSEREL + ANNUAL RYEGRASS
Passerel is a high yielding pasture grass with a digestible nutrient level of level of 75%+
and was number one in 95-96 University of Fla. trials yielding 9320 lbs./acre over the
nearest competitor. More heat tolerant than Marshall providing a longer grazing period.
high palatability. One of the best annual grasses for hay and forage.
USES FOR GULF ANNUAL RYEGRASS
This rye grass is a basic annual ryegrass used in
short term winter pastures, companion crop planting, green manure, erosion control,
wildlife food plots, and overseeding any warm season ground covers. Palatable and
easily grown in all situations adapted to the growing of ryegrass.
