Perennial Ryegrass Used For Lawns, Golf Courses
Perennial ryegrass is used both as a permanent and annual grass for lawns, parks, recreational
areas, erosion control. It has found popularity used as a fall /
spring beautification grass coverage, for polo fields, all athletic fields and any area that needs a tough quick coverage.
Ryegrass
can be grown in single stands for all purposes or in mixtures with bluegrass and fescues
for better quality coverage. This mixture is very popular in higher traffic areas and athletic fields of all kinds, in
the areas of adaptation.. Tough and resilient, perennial rye grass has been improved
over the years and has greatly benefited the lawn and pasture scene with its wear ability factors, plus disease and insect resistance. Perennial ryegrass makes a
great overseeding grass to use Bermuda grasses so as to provide a winter lawn and
optimum early spring playing conditions for athletic fields and golf courses. Any
place where a quick "green" look is desired.
Perennial is one of the most impact
resistant grasses that can be planted.
Overseeded Perennial Ryegrass grows
successfully at lower mowing heights than annuals. But their
persistence as a perennial require expertise management to get
this ryegrass to transition (die out) when spring green up of the
warm season grass begins.
Perennial Rye Grass For Pasture & Forage
On the forage scene, Perennial ryegrass can be grown as a permanent pasture or for forage, haying, silage, and as a ground cover crops to extend the grazing season. Permanent pastures of perennial rye have been planted worldwide and are being improved upon as research progresses. Perennial rye is one of the most palatable livestock grasses, highly digestible and a prolific crop for hay and silage purposes. It stands heavy grazing in well planted stands that are properly managed. Perennial is easily grown from seed and quick to germinate. One of the better pasture grasses that can stand up to heavy hoof damage. Rye grass varieties are well know for the "companion" aspects for planting and overseeding with other forage crops.
Annual Rye Grass Uses For Lawns & Erosion Control
Annual ryegrass is primarily used on all grass covers needing a winter/fall/spring overseeding while the permanent grass is in the dormancy stage. Many warm
season grass lawns are overseeded with annual ryegrass for winter greenery and earlier spring coverage in cooler areas. One of the easiest grasses to sow onto existing permanent lawns,
fast germinating, lasts one season and dies off easy, creating less transition problems. Ryegrass is one of the main grasses used for a fast erosion control preventative measures in all
lawn restoration and new lawn establishment.
The low cost of annual rye allows for several seedings on single stands in really high erosion
prone sites. One application followed a week later by a second lighter application will give very good
coverage for land clearing on hilly or banked sites. Ryegrass is a component of many
grass mixtures due to germination rates, early growth and is easily seeded by
broadcasting or mechanical means.

Annual Ryegrass Uses For Pasture, Hay & Wildlife Forage
Annual ryegrass is one of the most palatable grasses and highly
digestible for all livestock. Annual ryegrass along with perennial rye grass is grown all over the
world in the areas of adaptation for pastures, hay production and silage. Annual ryegrass is
planted alone for single short term pastures or overseeded into existing stands of warm season forages for winter pastures. Although annual ryegrass is a short term grass, the amount of forage material grown compensates for the
shorter life span of annual ryegrass. With fertilizer and water requirements met this is one of the best short term crop used for forages and hay production. Millions of acres are grown worldwide in ryegrass.
WILDLIFE - Annual ryegrass is one of
the main components of many wildlife plantings as forage and early cover. Ryegrass can easily
attract wildlife to a feeding site before the full foraging material matures. Easily broadcast into most existing plant stands helps to jump start attraction of deer and other wildlife to food plots. Annual rye also
has shown promise as a feed source for the stocked fish pond market.
